How to ship via Dover - Calais get GMR and complete customs clearance in 2022

GMR is now required by customs at Dover – Calais crossing and all other shipping routes. So called Brexit Phase 2 has now kicked in and as of 1 January 2022 full customs controls are required for all goods moving to and from European Union and Great Britain. The delayed import declarations are no longer allowed unless you have specific permission from HMRC.
So, if you are planning to move your goods through the ports in the United Kingdom that use the Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS), you will need to register for that service to get these goods through customs.
Most popular port locations such as Dover and Eurotunnel, Folkestone are working under the pre-lodgement model. This means you will need to use the GVMS and obtain GMR reference number in order to confirm that you have the correct documentation. You will need import, export or transit documentation before crossing the Channel into the UK from Europe. The Goods Movement Reference (GMR) is required in all circumstances.

So, how do you register for GVMS and obtain GMR?
To obtain a GMR you must register on the UK’s Goods Vehicle Movement System (GVMS). To register on GVMS you must first obtain a GB Economic Operators Registration and Identification number (EORI number).

What happens next, how do I check my GMR?
Approximately 15-20 minutes before your anticipated UK border crossing, you should check status of your GMR using check GMR status web portal. Whether you use Dover, Eurotunnel Folkestone to and from Calais or Dunkirk, this system will tell you whether your goods are free to progress, or they may need customs control.
Where do the drivers have to go if it shows the word “Customs” when arriving in the UK?
When arriving in Dover the driver should already know which Inland border inspection facility they need to report to. However, if they are unsure then they must report to at least one of the Inland Border Inspection Facilities below.
